boarding school, the workers I oversaw consisted of one middle-aged man with a year-round position and several high school boys working only during the summer. The boys were no
problem at all, but the man who had worked at the school for 20 years was resentful that he had to report to a female college student brought in to
rejuvenate the grounds. I was able to place the long-term employee in an intermediate position between the boys and me, charging him with ensuring completion of all routine maintenance
while I focused on landscape design and implementation. The boys gave the man the respect dictated by his age, and his subsequent elevation
of esteem contributed to a greater acceptance of me. After realizing that I was there to set grounds maintenance on a new path and that he would be left
to keep it on course, his entire attitude changed to one of nearly-cheerful helpfulness and creativity of thought. The same situation has occurred
at other locations, and not all have been resolved with the same degree of success. I always regarded the failure to overcome conflict issues as a management deficiency on
my part; Wilmots (2001) suggestion to try to change the other party (239) is a tactic I rarely seek to use, and perhaps it should be a tool used more
