A 10 page paper using the Kolb model to examine conflict assessment and management. As health care changes and patients increasingly take active roles in their own health care, they care less about hierarchy than they do results and practical application rather than medical theory. Though the struggle is between nurse practitioners and physicians, it is the patient ultimately most affected. In today’s health care system as it currently exists, nurses not only have “more time” for direct patient interaction than do MDs, they also generally have greater motivation. The model presented here stresses communication and experimentation. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

The rapid and wrenching changes in health care over the past generation have provided ample practice in conflict management, and the trend can only continue as budgets, managed care and
"lean operation" grow in their influence. Nurse practitioners and other advanced practice nurses have filled significant roles in US health care for years.
They have legal rights and the technical expertise to take on much of the burden of providing direct health care services, generally under the supervision of an MD.
This advanced practice niche is a hybrid position arising from increasing pressures on the still-evolving health care American health care system; it is a position respected in the profession and
welcomed by patients, but it is a continuing source of conflict within the profession as well. Concrete Experience Recent changes in Medicare billing
rules have reduced physicians ability to profit from providing health care service to Medicare, and they officially complained to the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) in 2000. The American
Medical Association (AMA) and associated physician groups were asking the HCFA to more closely monitor the activities of nurse practitioners and not to continue paying for nurse practitioner services to
the elderly. The Nurse Practitioner announced in its July 2000 issue that reports of the AMAs petition had been received as the issue
was going to press. The publication apparently had a summary of the petition but did not have access to the full document. The editor wrote, "The AMA request,
