settings involving a professional relationship with a client. Confidentiality is one of the basic tenants of the professionals relationship with a client. There are instances, however, when it
is not only appropriate but mandatory that the case manager share information with others. Not only are some situations more difficult than others in regard to maintaining confidentiality, there
are instances when it is not only appropriate but mandatory that the professional share information with others. Dual relationships present one
of the most interesting scenarios in which to explore the tenants of confidentiality. The Code of Ethics for mental health counselors are particularly interesting form a confidentiality perspective because
it prohibits dual-relationships, those relationships in which the case manager is interacting with the client on both a professional level and a personal level (Moleski and Kiselica, 2005). Although
there are several reasons for such a prohibition, confidentiality concerns are one such reason. Dual relationships have the potential to easily lead to confidentiality breaches.
Some of the more frequent situations that might be encountered involving difficult to avoid dual relationships are situations where the counselor has an "administrative, supervisory,
and evaluative" relationship with a potential client (Code of Ethics of the American Mental Health Counselors Association, 2003). The Code of Ethics specifies in these cases that the counselor
"accord recipients informed choice, confidentiality and protection from physical and mental harm" (Code of Ethics of the American Mental Health Counselors Association, 2003). In other words the case manager
instigates professional precautions to insure that the counseling goal is not adversely impacted for those clients with whom dual relationships cannot be avoided (Code of Ethics of the American Mental
