of theologians for centuries to come. However, his journey toward spirituality was not easy or smooth. In his Confessions, he is brutally honest, recounting the sins of his wild youth.
He does this for the edification of his readers, who -- hopefully -- will gain spiritual knowledge from reading of Augustines errors, before accepting Christ. Augustine begins his autobiographical account
of his call to Gods service by praying, praising God and showing the reader that he conceives of this narrative as a prayer of praise for God, as well as
an account of contrition and thanksgiving for Gods guidance. While Augustines father was pagan, his mother, Monica, was a devout Christian, and she raised him accordingly. Once when Augustine was
seriously ill, his mother made arrangements to have him baptized. However, he recovered before the ritual could be performed, and the baptism was postponed. Augustine felt that had he been
baptized, the divine grace granted through this ritual might have aided him in leading a less sinful early life. Evidence that Augustine was blessed with intelligence and inquiring mind
appeared early in his life and was demonstrated through his enthusiasm for truth and learning. Nevertheless, his boyhood sounds quite normal, as he admits to having loved playing games and
a certain inclination towards laziness. In discussing his childhood, Augustines theories toward education come out. He adamantly rejected the idea of compelling children to study such things as ancient Roman
and Greek mythology. These texts do not lead a young soul toward God, but rather picture pagan deities as corrupt as humanity. As this suggests, Augustine discusses how he began
his journey toward God in childhood, guided from within to take the right path. He writes that he had an "implanted providence...a trace of that mysterious Unity when I was
