need for research covering a broad range. Importance of Research An example is the inclusive classroom. The inclusive classroom has become more
than only a "nice" idea or an interesting experiment. In todays schools, it is a matter of law. Not only are schools required to include learning-disabled (LD) students
in the regular classroom, LD students must accomplish their learning in the least restrictive environment (LRE). These legal - and ethical - requirements have been in place for several
years; they have been given new meaning by No Child Left Behind (NCLB). It is no longer enough that LD children be included in regular education classrooms, NCLB requires
that schools be able to demonstrate that their LD students are truly learning as well. Douvanis and Hulsey (2002) provide the legal definition of the least restrictive environment (LRE),
implying that there are different LREs for different students. The courts do not agree, however, leaving it to educators to arrive at some workable approach that benefits all students.
Another example is the effect of parental involvement. Parental involvement has been shown repeatedly to benefit regular education students, but aside from
assessment of how often parents attend conferences to establish the special education students individual education plan (IEP), there has been much less research focusing on parental involvement in special education
