to rely on imagination to provide the following hypothetical example of how this assignment might be completed. Research on language and social interaction describes the communicative processes that transpire
between people in conversation (LaBaron and Koschmann, 2003). Using these tools, I conduct an observation in my workplace, which is as part time service staff at the lunch counter in
the student center. As ours is a culturally diverse campus, my coworkers are a mix of ethnic, racial and national identities, who, like myself, are students at this university. One
is from Israel, two are African American, and one is Hispanic, the daughter of immigrants from Costa Rica. I joined this group as they gathered in a sheltered corner just
outside the main door on their break. They have to go outside to smoke a cigarette as there is a campus-wide no-smoking policy. There seemed to be a tight-knit
culture among my coworkers that derived from having been on the job far longer than myself. I hung back, not participating in the conversation very much, simply observing, their interaction,
body language and gestures. Robert Hopper, in 1981, identified and described the nature and function of "taken-for-granted (TFGs), unspoken yet ordinarily understood between-the-lines aspects of talk" (Fitch, 2003, p. 77).
Certainly, TRGs seemed to be evident, as Greg, one of the African American students alluded to the current shift supervisor and shrugged, to which the other African American, Kelvin, nodded
agreement. They continued talking about the shift supervisor but doing so in terms that were not fully stated, as it was assumed that those present understood the context and
