Skinner, who considered the nature of simple discrimination relative to stimulus response patterns and the use of operant conditioning. Initially, a model of simple discrimination would be based on
the desired goal of having the subject select one option over others presented; for example, the selection of a red key, but not the selection of green keys. Central
to this goal, then, is the introduction of stimulus control and the repeated use of the same stimulus control to determine a correlation between selection and specific outcomes following successive
approximations. In models for simple discrimination with monkeys, the selection of the red keys would produce a food reward, described as a primary reinforcer, while the selection of
green keys would provide no reward. Repeated performance of the same task would demonstrate the same outcomes, suggesting what Skinner described as operant conditioning. Skinners theory focused on
operant conditioning and stimulus-response (S-R) patterns, suggesting that when such patterns were reinforced through rewards, the individual would continue to be conditioned to response (SCOB, 2004). Furthermore, reinforcement is
the main element in the S-R theory - with the reinforcer being anything that strengthens the desired response (SCOB, 2004). Such reinforcement can include food rewards (usually used for rats,
monkeys and other animals) or positive psychosocial reinforcers for human subjects (SCOB, 2004). The conceptual base of this, then, is the correspondence between the presence of a discrimination model
(choosing one option over others), the introduction of a positive stimulus reinforcer for the correct selection, and the reinforcement of this selection process through repetition.
Simultaneous Matching Stimulus control for simultaneous matching is linked to the model for relational matching performance outlined by Lowenkron (1989). This model is based on
