seats to hear a night of classical music performed by the San Diego Symphony Orchestra. The hall was full, close to capacity, and the audience seemed ready to be thrilled
and captivated and they were not disappointed. The conductor entered to enthusiastic applause and the magic began. The selections on the beginning of the program each had a strong Latin
American/Spanish flavor that suggested exotic locals and customs. Specifically, the program began with a wonderful suite by Manuel de Falla (1876-1946) entitled "The Three-Cornered Hat," which--as the name suggests-- was
quite lively in its rhythm and appeal. There was also a distinctly Spanish quality to the music. De Falla, who was Spanish, was strongly influenced by the music of his
native land (Falla, Manual de). The music was jaunty at times and, then seductive, one had the feeling that the composer was telling a slightly risqu? story. The second
selection was also Spanish in flavor in that it was composed by Latin American Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887-1959) of Rio de Janeiro, who was taught music primarily by his father (Heitor
Villa-Lobos). In this selection, the orchestras deeper, and therefore, seemingly darker tonal quality, adds a rich sub-text to Villa-Lobos bright and forceful music. Villa-Lobos Guitar Concerto begins with a
movement marked Allero preciso, which suggests its lively and fast tempo. Then it slows during an andante movement and resumes an even faster rhythm for the final movement. Machlis comments
that the music of Latin America consists of European idioms, which have been overlain with Native American and African influences (Machlis 493). This feature was certainly evident in the music
of Villa-Lobos. Rather than "correct" the tunes and rhythms of Brazil, Villa-Lobos absorbed them into his formal compositions, which is a feature that he shared in common with Falla who,
