Discussion What is mental illness? Because this is a general question, and because there are many reputable web sites that deal with medicine, it seemed logical to go to the
Internet for the answer. Most sites define mental illness in much the same way; heres what WebMD says: "Mental illness is any disease or condition affecting the brain that influences
the way a person thinks, feels, behaves and/or relates to others and to his or her surroundings" (Mental health: Mental illness basics, 2008). Is mental illness an illness, a disease
or a disorder? It appears that the best term to use is probably "disorder," but this may depend on the specific case. Depression is considered a "mental disorder," but not
a disease, and the distinction is made for a reason: "A disorder simply means something that is out of the ordinary, which depression and other mental disorders are. They are
more specifically a cluster of symptoms that research has shown to correlate highly with a specific emotional state" (Grohol, 2007). Websters says that a disease is "a condition of the
living animal or plant body or of one of its parts that impairs normal functioning and is typically manifested by distinguishing signs and symptoms" (Grohol, 2007). Diseases are more typically
thought of as being related to a physical organ or system; the brain obviously is an organ, but "it is one of the least understood and easily the most complex
