linked with courage (Scorza, 2001). At the same time, Machiavellis idea of virtue is something that often connotes the courage or prowess of military leaders, princes, and statesmen (2001). It
is not always aligned with moral goodness in the ordinary sense, something that was true of Ciceros concept (2001). In fact, it is thought that a wicked man will
often possess more virtue than a good man and Machiavellis complaint against Piero Soderini, for example, was his reluctance to use wicked means to perform duties, something that cost
the city its liberty (2001). From Machiavellis point of view, Soderini lacked guts to do his job, and Machiavelli even considers Romulus as one who possessed considerable virtue
even though he murdered his own brother (Scorza, 2001). Clearly, Machiavellis view of character is not aligned with what many think of as character or virtue today. To Machiavelli, leadership
was everything and to that end, courage was important. Machiavelli in his own leadership showed courage too as he organized a militia under considerable pressure. He never took the easy
way out. At the same time, in his work The Prince, Machiavelli saw a leader as someone who did what was good for the people. Leadership and theories of leadership
have come a long way since Machiavellis time. Heider (1986) claims that leaders must be trustworthy and also must pay attention to the needs of others. They should be an
inspiration as well (1986). This simple paradigm is not much different from the way in which Machiavelli thought. One does have to exemplify leadership qualities in that they are role
models, but from time to time they also have to listen to the people. That is very important and represented in both views. Bennis & Nanus (1997) support similar views
