expect, of course, though every birth is different. First-time mothers may or may not be prepared for the experience; those who believe they are may learn differently during the
course of labor and delivery. The nurse can make a huge difference in mothers experiences and perceptions of the process, even if they
already have children. The purpose here is to develop the concept of comfort as it applies to mothers in labor. Developing the Concept
The use of pain-killing drugs during labor and childbirth used to be quite common, but association with increased complications for the newborn along with greater attention to the "natural"
process of childbirth discouraged the approach to childbirth that was common in the 1950s. Many mothers reason that women have been giving birth without pain killers since the beginning
of the human race; therefore they should be able to do the same. Many couples faithfully attend their Lamaze(r) classes, practice breathing techniques and arrive at the hospital armed
with focus point objects for mom to keep her gaze locked on while dad coaches her breathing. Others plan to receive an epidural anesthesia early on and so make
no preparations at all. Nearly all of the first-time parents from both groups are surprised at what actually happens. As one with
much greater exposure to and experience with the process of labor and delivery, the nurse occupies the position of being able to be of greatest assistance to the mother.
