ventures is dependent not just on computers but also on the successful operation of those computers. Computing system failures can have catastrophic results for human endeavors, so it pays to understand everything that one can about the proper and functional operation of these systems. Endemic to all forms of computers systems are "operating systems", the software that acts as a conduit between humans and the internal processes of the machine itself, enabling the user to control those processes in an understandable and responsive fashion. For this reason, having a basic understanding of operating systems is essential to understanding the function of computers. This paragraph helps the student provide a basic explanation about processes. The first thing to understand about computer operating systems is the concept of "processes". While "processes" is sometimes used as a generic term in computing, it does have a specific definition as well; in computing, a process refers to a "job performed by an operating system" (Muhammad, 2011). "Job" itself isnt a terribly specific term in its own right, and can here refers to any one of a number of different types of processes, such as "a program in execution, an asynchronous activity, the animated spirit of a procedure in execution, the entity to which processors are assigned" and so on (Muhammad, 2011). All things considered, the most common definition of a process is "a program in use" (Muhammad, 2011). However, it is important to distinguish between a program and a process because they are definitively not the same thing; a process is referred to as an "active" entity whereas a program is a passive entity (it is a piece of code that waits passively until called by the system) (Muhammad, 2011). A process is also higher in computational hierarchy than a program (Stallings, 2009). A process ...
