There are a number of elements which the student should consider when looking to set up a computerised accounting
system for this kind of business. For example, what are the specific advantages which the building firm will want from a computerised system, and how will such a system be
superior to their current methods of accounting? The student should look in some detail at the particular requirements which a building firm might have, and consider what features will be
essential in a computerised system, given these specialised needs.
In general, automated systems have the two advantages of speed and accuracy. The student could point out the merits of accurate data storage and retrieval over more
traditional methods, the way in which calculations of profits, salaries, etc, can be facilitated, and the reliability of electronic data storage as opposed to hard copy. For a firm such
as this which has a comparatively rapid turnover, a system which is capable of keeping tracks of new developments and incorporating them into the data bank would be a considerable
improvement on the method they are currently using.
