purpose. BASIC, for example, being simple, is the most appropriate for beginners: PASCAL is also simple, but rather more structured whereas C is used for programming where the programmer needs
to have complete control over the program. Assembly, which is also used for real world programming, gives more control than C does, but is not as easy to compile. However,
it is the most useful hardware control, since it has features which the other languages do not.
According to Infobase (2003) the most powerful and also the most difficult language is Machine. Follett (2003) makes the point that when programming languages were
first developed, it was thought that there would only be a few languages each with their own specific field of application, such as COBOL for business and FORTRAN for science.
However, there has been a much larger number of languages developed since then, and as each becomes more popular the number of applications which it can be used for increases.
Follett also notes that since programming is part of the free market economy, innovation is not restricted and the success of the various languages depends on its success as part
of that market. The very first programming languages, back in the
time of Babbage, were little more than a series of steps in the wiring of a computer to instruct it to perform a particular task. The earliest languages which were
