to be destructive. Of course viruses are inherently destructive since they change files, infect PCs, and take up valuable space, but most viruses are not intentionally destructive like the infamous
Michelangelo which unleashed itself on computers on only one certain date this year and completely ruined many hard drives. Lots of viruses are written by experimenters
and computer enthusiasts who write them for the challenge. Other virus programmers have a message to spread like the developer of the Macintosh "Peace" virus. Then there are the people
who are disgruntled for one reason or other and just want to be nasty. II. The Progression and Seriousness of Viruses Viruses spread into an
organization by any mechanism whereby magnetic media can be accessed or brought into the company. Entry points could include an employees diskette from home, a consultants diskette, or a borrowed
diskette from a friend, bulletin boards, LAN or WAN servers, commercial or demo/evaluation software, an outside technicians diskette or a PC serviced by outside depot.1 Any
mechanism by which an executable file can enter into an organization can cause a virus. A virus spreads when an infected program is executed on a PC, infecting other
executable files that are then shared and executed on other PCs and so on. Virtually every computer installation is susceptible to the damage that computer viruses may cause. Without
appropriate precautionary measures, it is difficult to contain/prevent the spread of these unwanted interlopers. The key to such precautionary measures is education about viruses and the damage they can
cause. Computer viruses have become a major security issue during the last few years. They pose a threat to the reliability and validity of many aspects
