for miles. Times change, certainly theres no doubt about that. At one time computers were so large and temperamental they were given entire buildings with expensive air conditioning
for their very own. Now, theres one or two cars per family, practically a telephone for every member of the family and televisions and computers can be found in
dens, bedrooms and in the kitchen. The path of technology has confronted and overcome each new problem that has stood in the way of progress. The computer viruses
currently attacking the computer population is no exception. It has been estimated that more than 200 million personal computers had Internet access by the end of 1999, ninety percent of
them using the same basic applications (Leon 36). With the explosion of computer use and the instigation of the World Wide Web, or Internet, there are a myriad of
new problems to be resolved. Probably the major obstacle has been the epidemic of computer viruses. "Computer viruses are programs that will replicate themselves and spread without the victims
knowledge. They generally attach themselves to other files and programs, or to the boot sector of a disk. While there are over 43,000 known viruses that can infect
a PC, there are only about 40 known viruses that are specifically designed for Macintosh computers. Yet both platforms are equally vulnerable to the newest form of virus: the
macro virus" (Mikat 10). The use of the medical analogy may lead one to think of the problem as less than serious, however, the viruses are very capable
of extensive damage and are epidemic in their influence. One of the more virulent viruses, Melissa, is said to have caused more than $400m in the United States alone.
