insulated society. When individuals first enroll in the armed forces, they generally have no real understanding of the realities of combat. Worse than having no idea about combat at all,
many are indoctrinated with false and extravagant notions of warfare inherited from movies, television, and video games. There are many who cite this trend as a way to disparage the
fighting capacity of the modern armed forces, such as the United States Marines, institutions which do have a strong technological warfare bent in the modern era. However, a solution is
rapidly emerging. Ironically, it might be the very interactive media of computer software and "games" that are so disparaged that lend soldiers a chance to acclimate themselves to realistic on-the-ground
combat scenarios before ever entering the battlefield in reality. This paper will explore the utility of computer simulations in combat training, proposing a design methodology for an effective simulation system.
