Assistant Subject: Evaluating Office Equipment Date: Well before the Y2K date problem worries surrounding the dawn of the year 2000, one group of authors
commented on the state of the personal computer (PC) industry and its products: "seated in front of a PC with the name scratched off, you couldnt tell the difference
between an IBM and a Dell, Compaq or Gateway ... Buying a PC today is no more complex than getting, say, a toaster" (Greenfeld, Aunapu, Gwynne and Nordan, 1999; p.
50). It appears that little has changed today. Prices have come down and technological ability has increased, but in the end most computers are nearly directly comparable.
The key to securing reliable PCs that perform as expected and needed lies in accurately determining what the PC needs to do and then selecting from a group that meets
identified criteria. Certainly there are many options available today, but there are only a few consistently meaningful for business performance. Among those
- and the leading criteria on which I based comparisons - are internal ("clock") speed; RAM capacity; internal storage capacity; processor reliability; and optical drive capabilities. The choice of
operating system is important as well, but that can be changed and all of the evaluated computers include Microsoft Windows(r) XP Professional as the operating system.
Options such as case size (tower, mini tower and small form factor) can influence the final decision based on the physical needs of individual users, but generally
