considering implementing a Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) that some say will rival NAFTA in its comprehensiveness. Canada has many considerations to make in regard to this
agreement, however. If it is to be in her best interest she must carefully work out a plan to protect her agricultural producers from excessive competition from the EU.
In addition, Canada must somehow convince the EU to make an exception in terms of the products she is already producing that would come into conflict with the EU
requirements on geographical naming. The establishment of the European Union (EU) in 1993 has unified European countries as they have never been
unified at any other point in history. If Canada does in fact enter into CETA with the EU she could stand to benefit tremendously from this unification in terms
of increased trade and revenue from exports. Field (2010) estimates a joint benefit of $28.2 billion with the agreement. This is not to say that this
integrated political community and CETA will not face challenges. Indeed there are many challenges confronting Canada in particular. These challenges are, of course, not unique to Canada but
because it is geographically isolated from the rest of the EU it does present somewhat different considerations that must be taken into account.
As it currently exists, the EU must constantly walk a tightrope between member nation restriction and promotion if it is to balance out the best interest of the EU as
