the cycle was written. ABOUT FRANZ SCHUBERT Franz Schubert (1797-1828) remained throughout his life an obscure and very little known composer. To his great heartache his talent at
composing went virtually unheeded and several of his works were played publicly to less than outstanding reception. At times his abilities were practically ridiculed in public, yet he continued
his work, determined to become great. His reverence for Beethoven was well known and in fact he served as a pallbearer at Beethovens funeral. After that event his prime
request was that he someday be buried next to Beethoven. Up until the end of his life Schubert worked on various compositions, but at the very end when he
suffered delirium from pain, Schubert was still writing and re-writing Die Winterreise. In his delirium he implored his brother to tell him whether Beethoven was in the room with
them - and his brother replied in the affirmative. This seemed satisfying enough an answer to Schubert who passed away later that afternoon (Franz Schubert PG). Aged 31
at the time of his early death, Schubert had already penned more than 600 songs (Biography PG). The German composer had about him his own distinctive talent when it came
to writing about the type of subject matter for which he is now well known. It is indeed unfortunate he never received the proper recognition he was due when
