mainstream medicine that is not only costly, but has been accused as being ineffective. They use what some refer to as "alternative medicine." The concept of alternative medicine may be
thought of as any method related to medical treatment that is outside the area of mainstream or conventional medicine ("Alternative," 2004). Of course, those who practice this type of
medicine are not necessarily regarded as alternative practitioners and today, hypnosis and acupuncture are viewed as acceptable practice (2004). Although some of these practices may be construed as alternative
types of medicine, there has been more acceptance of late, so much so that some insurance companies like Oxford will pay for treatments in many alternative niches. The I.R.S.
will allow a deduction for herbal supplements if physician recommended. While there is some acceptance, it is no panacea. There is a conflict that exists on both sides and the
definition of what is or what is not alternative is always changing ("Alternative," 2004). Although alternative medicine is generally seen as an alternative, and something that replaces conventional medicine,
the combination of the two is called complementary medicine ("Alternative," 2004). Also, the term integrative medicine is sometimes used and is a concept created by Andrew Weil, MD
(2004). He claims that it refers to the best of both worlds and an integration of alternative and mainstream medicine (2004). All variations on alternative medicine is generally
referred to as "complementary and alternative medicine" or CAM (2004). One factors which are promoted in the popularity and use of CAM are the filling of a void
