"complimentary" not only to themselves but also to modern approaches to medicine. CAM is a two-pronged approach to healing. It, by the fact of its definition, recognizes Western
medicine as one of those prongs. The other prong, however, relates to traditional medicines. The term "alternative" refers to those alternative approaches to health care that fall outside the
care provided by licensed medical doctors and the mainstream medical establishments within which they work. In the past so-called alternative medicine this has included such alternative practices as massage,
herbalism, and acupuncture as well as more esoteric approaches such as Mind-Body Healing. These approaches are integrated into the modern approaches to yield CAM. Rojas-Cooley and Grant (2006) note
the evolution of an even more recent phrase that describes the blending that has occurred between Western medicine and alternative medicine. That phrase is "integrative medicine" (Rojas-Cooley and Grant,
2006). Rojas-Cooley and Grant (2006, 581) clarifies that integrative medicine refers to the: "combination
of conventional medicine and complementary and alternative therapies that have a strong scientific base for use and safety"
As positive as some CAMs are in promoting health, the general public has been somewhat reluctant to accept these approaches. This is due to three distinct
factors. The first factor that hinders our acceptance of CAM in the United States is the fact that the mainstream medical establishment has made a deliberate and calculated effort
to make such approaches unacceptable and possibly even illegal. They have monopolized the insurance system so that it is only mainstream medicine in most instances that is approved.
