Modern medicine is just beginning to recognize the value of
some of the more traditional approaches to healing. Many of these traditional approaches are now recognized as valuable components of patient health. Consequently, a new term has evolved.
That term is Complimentary Alternative Medicine (CAM). CAM encompasses a wide gamut of approaches to health care which are "complimentary" not only to themselves but also to modern
approaches to medicine. The actual effectiveness of CAM, however, is just now beginning to be explored from a scientific level. As Jagtenbero, Evans, Grant, Howden, Lewis, and Singer
(2006, 323) observe, alternative approaches to medicine are often "accused of lacking an adequate scientific basis". The intent of this paper is to address the question of "whether or
not people who use complementary alternative medicine heal better and faster than people who use western medicine exclusively". The term CAM
denotes a two pronged approach to healing. It, by the fact of its definition, recognizes Western medicine as one of those prongs. The other prong, however, relates to
traditional medicines. The term "alternative" refers to those alternative approaches to health care that fall outside the care provided by licensed medical doctors and the mainstream medical establishments within which
they work. In the past so-called alternative medicine this has included such alternative practices as massage, herbalism, and acupuncture as well
