there may be complexity to the degree where it appears to be chaos (Overman, 1996). Looking at the way complexity and chaos are reflected in the organizational context can
add to the understanding of that environment. Pascale (1999) sees the organization as a complex adaptive system, stating that this is an
approach where organization may reach an optimal state temporarily and then will go down to go up. There are four principles that are postulated as being relevant to seeing an
organization in this manner; that the complex adaptive systems will be under threat, which is also a precursor to the systems death, where they are in equilibrium (Pascale, 1999). The
second principle is that complex adaptive systems the characteristics of self- organization, which requires intelligence from the nodes in the organizational network, which in turn creates emergent complexity (Pascale, 1999).
The third principle postulated is that the undertaking of complex task will result in the adaptive system moving towards perceived chaos, the presence of competitive pressures force evolution and creativity
within that system (Pascale, 1999). The last principle is that living systems may be disturbed due to the presence of weaknesses in the cause and effect linkages, but they cannot
be directed (Pascale, 1999). The principles have been obtained from the natural world, but are fully applicable to the business environment and
can make the strategic position and challenges more understandable, especially where the context of equilibrium and stability sees a failure to adapt and evolve (Pascale, 1999). In a commercial environment
this may mean being left behind and loss of competitive advantages and a failure to move forward. Pressures for change are likely to cause changes and have the potential to
