643 Todays multicultural classroom presents many challenges for educators. One of the more prominent of
those challenges is optimizing learning for all students even when some students are very different than others. This is particularly true when it comes to competiveness verses cooperative preferences.
Some cultures are simply more competitive than are others. American culture, in fact, is extremely competitive. We seem to want to
compete whether we are on the football field or walking down the hall between classrooms. Other cultures, however, are considerably less competitive. Many are quite meek in their
character. Consider, for example, Native American cultures. These cultures are typically more cooperative than competitive. There are, of course, many more examples in our modern world of
both competitive cultures and cooperative cultures. There are also exceptions to these general classifications. The difference that is often so
apparent between competitive cultures and cooperative cultures has the potential to result in many problems in the multicultural classroom. It is up to the teacher to circumvent those problems,
