and age. The goal of culturally competent nursing is to provide care that is consistent with a clients specific cultural needs (Cherry & Jacob, 2002). An AAN Expert Panel Report
relays information that suggests that following four principles can help to increase cultural competence in the profession (2002). The first principle is that care should be designed on an
individual basis, and the second suggestion is that care also considers the patients cultural norms (2002). The third is that care should include empowerment strategies to facilitate client decision making
and the fourth is that care is provided with sensitivity to an individuals cultural background (2002). This model shows an immersion in quality care but one that also respects individual
differences. Transcultural nursing is seen as a culturally competent practice field that is both client-centered and research-based (Potter & Perry, 2001). Concepts such as communication, space, and time are relevant
to these cultural issues. Communication and culture are interrelated, and many factors come into play such as native language, voice quality, pronunciation, the use of nonverbal cues as well as
