These two clerics have had immense influence in the formation of the political ideologies of Islam. Sayyid Qutb is said to have exerted great influence over Osama bin Laden. The purpose here is to compare and contrast the bases of this type of political ideology with that of Western liberalism, and the paper uses the philosophies of Rawls, Kant and Mill to accomplish that end. Sayyid Qutb and Yusuf al-Qaradawi have had immense influence in the formation of the political ideologies of Islam. Sayyid Qutb is said to have exerted great influence over Osama
bin Laden (Irwin, 2001). The purpose here is to compare and contrast the bases of this type of political ideology with that of Western liberalism.
John Rawls Harvard philosopher John Rawls (1921- ) developed a synthesis of justice as fairness, using elements of both
Kantian and utilitarian philosophy. He uses his synthesis to describe "a method for the moral evaluation of social and political institutions" (Kay justice).
Kay (2000) presents a hypothetical situation of an individual being responsible for developing a completely new social contract for the society that exists today, rather than forcing the existing
society to function under old and perhaps archaic rules. That new social contract needs to be fair, however - this is a benevolent society and therefore the its social
contract needs to be fair as well. "Rawls suggests that you imagine yourself in an original position behind a veil of ignorance . Behind this veil, you know nothing
of yourself and your natural abilities, or your position in society. You know nothing of your sex, race, nationality, or individual tastes" (Kay justice), but you do know that individuals
will possess differing abilities and points of view. How to accommodate all fairly? Rawls concludes: Each person is to have an equal right to the most extensive
basic liberty compatible with similar liberty for others. Social and economic inequalities are to be arranged so that they are both: a) reasonably expected to be to everyones advantage
