The three main female characters in A Room With A View, Mrs Dalloway and The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie
portray several very different aspects of the way in which the female intellect and personality develop and the way in which women are taught to interact with society as a
whole. The three authors use a number of different structures and stylistic techniques in order to delineate the way in which their protagonists relate to the other characters and towards
their socio-cultural environment, and consequently the protagonists represent three very diverse types of women.
Lucy Honeychurch, in Forsters A Room With A View, is an excellent example of the kind of
young woman who is constrained in her behaviour and her attitudes by social and family ties, but who is eventually able to break free from the hindrances of social convention
and discover her own independent nature. At the beginning of the story, for example, it is evident that it is Charlotte who is versed in the ways of correct social
behaviour and not Lucy; when the Emersons offer to exchange rooms in the pension so that the women can have a room with a view, Charlotte sees this as unsuitable,
