professional journal article and one in the popular press, even though both may be dealing with exactly the same topic. For example, the two texts are intended to reach different
audiences: one would expect the reader of the journal article to require detailed and formal analysis of the topic, and to have an existing background in the relevant fields of
research. The reader of the press article, on the other hand, may or may not have knowledge of the topic, and the aim of the writer is to communicate with
both those who have such expertise and those who have not. In addition, the fact that the
article appears at all in the popular press indicates that it is of general interest: the writer therefore uses the kind of language and structure which ensures it reaches the
widest possible audience. One also has to take into account the editorial agenda of the newspaper or magazine. Even though the article may cover a specifically scientific topic, its inclusion
may be the result of a political agenda, and the article couched in terms which will, subtly or otherwise, promote this.
We would therefore expect to see a basic similarity of content between the two articles, but considerable differences in the way that they are structured
and the level of knowledge of the intended audience. These differences are effectively illustrated by two recent articles on food marketing to children: Food Marketing to Children, from Which? Magazine
and Story and French, Food Advertising and Marketing Directed at Children and Adolescents in the US (International Journal of Behavioural Nutrition and Physical Actvity, 2004, 1:3).
