The look on Venus face is a cheerful one, and she appears to be completely relaxed. In Edgar Degas "Nude Woman having her hair combed,"
a typical, mortal woman is presented with her hair being groomed by another woman (quite possibly her mother), whose upper half is not shown in the painting. The mortal
plainness of this anonymous woman is evident as she sits in an ill-colored bedroom, surrounded by the apparent boredom of her four walls. The look on the girls face
is one that quite possibly could suggest that she is either displeased, annoyed, or both. I have realized that in The Toilet of
Venus, Venus is also having her hair done. In fact, she is being dressed and having her jewelry put on by the baby angels as well. Realistically, the
young girl in Degas painting is being similarly groomed, yet without all of the luxurious amenities of angelic assistance that Venus is enjoying in the other painting.
And with these material differences in each paintings thematic structure, I begin to realize just how strong the contrast was between a mortal woman and a goddess.
Quite frankly, both Venus and the nameless woman seem equally as fair, yet because of her godly status, Venus is entitled to so much more. This idea also
illustrates the sharp difference in happiness between mortals and immortals. The woman in Degas painting seems bothered by the monotony of life, while Venus seems remarkably carefree and accepting
of her surroundings. In my opinion, each of the artists choice of coloring further illustrates these differences. In Bouchers work, The Toilet of Venus
