of two men who are, in many ways, victims of their particular time and place. They are both men who are faced with situations that are ultimately beyond their control,
and situations that push them to particular levels of responsibility. The following paper compares the two men and then examines which one bears the most responsibility for his demise.
Comparison of Oedipus and Okonkwo In the story of Oedipus he is a man who unknowingly kills is father and them marries his mother. He was adopted as an
infant by a couple and so never really knew his history. He was also unaware, as a child, of a prophecy wherein he would kill his father and marry his
mother. It is not until he has done both that he really begins to learn the truth. Throughout much of the story he seeks the murderer of the previous king,
whose place he has taken, determined that the murderer will be punished. He consistently seeks the truth, despite the fact that each piece of truth leads him closer and closer
to understanding that he is the murderer. In the case of Oedipus fate or prophecy is in complete control of his life and his destiny. He has no real
way out of his situation at all because no matter what he does to avoid the killing of his father and marrying his mother he has no control over the
outcome. It is the prophecy that affects his life and completely controls it. He has no control over what happens to him in many respects. But, he does have control
over how he handles the entire situation, and the truth. With Okonkwo he is a man who is very connected and immersed in his culture. While he is a
