cargo shipping industry; liner shipping and tramp shipping, with management performing many of the same costs, in order to achieve many of the same goals. However, there are also some
differences in terms of the management of operations. To consider this we can look at two companies; Navigation Maritime Bulgare (NMB); a tramp shipping company operating 49 ships, mainly bulk
carriers and Maersk Line, a liner company. In both cases, tramp shipping as seen with NMB and liner shipping as seen with
Maersk, the management functions will be undertaken with reference to the organizational goals, with management planning, organizing, leading and controlling in ways aligned to the operations of a segment. To
appreciate inherent differences between these two company it is important to contrast the way in which the operations, and management of tramp and liner operations of these two segments of
the shipping market. From a practical perspective the difference between the two companies can be seen in terms of the size as well
as the differences in the fleet that are operated, but the fleet differences more linked to the type of goods that carried rather than the type of shipping, as NMB
have ships designed for bulk carriage but Maersk have a ranger of ships, with a focus on container ships. When looking at
