Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 3 page paper comparing Management Information Systems (MIS) and Decision Support Systems (DSS). Though the purpose of each is to lead managers to make better and more effective decisions, there are differences between these two complementary systems. A DSS can make business more effective by disallowing many missteps that would be made in error. The DSS does not “forget” a detail that has the power to alter a project, and it does not look on one project more favorably than another. It is unbiased and absolutely based on facts, giving its human managers better information on which to base virtually any decision. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

Systems (MIS) and Decision Support Systems (DSS) are terms that are often used interchangeably, or MIS is given a broader meaning than it actually should have. Though the purpose
of each is to lead managers to make better and more effective decisions, there are differences between these two complementary systems. Management Information Systems
Post and Anderson (2003) give a specific definition of MIS. These authors report that an MIS "consists of five related components - hardware, software, people, procedures, and databases."
It is an organizational system, that is, one that collects and retains data relevant to the operation of the entire organization. Thus payroll is part of MIS.
It requires hardware and software to operate properly, and it requires people both to instruct it and to carry out the "instructions" it provides to people. Together these define
the procedures by which the subsystem is used - i.e., the date defines the beginning of a new pay period and signals the time to begin reconciling the old one.
Employee records are updated according to the information contained within the records of the pay period immediately past - each employees time worked,
vacation time, benefits accrued and other information is updated according to how the pay period has affected them; then the system begins the process of preparing a check for each
employee. Databases are involved because they are the repository of the information that the MIS updates and tracks. Though the MIS provides data with which decisions can be
made (How many hours were worked during the previous week? What was the total cost of labor during the preceding year? How much has the business paid in
