are places of confinement for those who have been convicted of minor offenses, or for those who are awaiting trial in a city or county facility. Prisons are places
of confinement where persons serving longer sentences are housed in state or federal facility. Incarceration may occur in city, county, municipal, state, or federal facilities.
In both types of facility individuals are held behind bars. There is strict security enforcement. Individuals have to wear the uniform of the particular institution
they are in. Some wear bright orange. Others where stripes. Some wear blue jeans and T-shirts. Someone dictates all the activities of the incarcerated individuals.
They are told when to get up, when to eat, when to bathe, when or if they may have visitors, and when to go to sleep at night.
City and county jails are very numerous. Almost every city in the nation has a jail. Prisons are less numerous. There are
less of them because they are state facilities, or federal facilities. The Federal government has gathered data and published yearly the prisoner count
in each state, the District of Columbia, and the Federal prison system. This has occurred since 1926 (Staff). The types of information gathered is as follows: * ? prison
