SA144sks.rtf In comparing and contrasting characters in plays and works of literature, there are always similarities. There are character types which seem to appear over and over again. Of course, each has his unique take on life, but some do have similar qualities to others of his type. The villain in literature is legendary. What would a story be without a character that the audience may hate? Yet, not all villains are entirely bad and it is the villain with a heart that is intriguing. An intelligent villain is also something that can be thought of as interesting. Iago in Othello and Antony in Julius Caesar are two such types. They are both intriguing as they have superior intelligence but little backbone. To some extent they are each opportunists and they do things to not only surprise, but shock audiences. Both are Shakespearean creations. Shakespeare as a writer creates works of various strengths and weaknesses and which are judged differently in different periods of time, but the man as a writer stays very much the same. The homogeneity of his works is remarkable and he does tend to create similar characters in a variety of his plays. There are heroes and tragic heroes as well as women who are similar in style. Many have compared and contrasted Ophelia and Juliet for example. Ophelias obsession with Hamlet and her dissent into madness renders her a rather unique character and one that has drawn audiences sympathies.
