Although both stories are tragedies and contain great suffering, Dante is without a doubt the stronger of the two characters. The men share a commonality of fate stepping in and deciding their actions for them. Dante's fate, however was a much better one than Lear's was. Dante thought himself unworthy and Lear thought himself great. They were both wrong. Both men had eye-opening experiences. In Lear's case, it was too late.'

Later in the same year his banishment was made continuous. If he was taken in the territory of the Florentine Republic, he was condemned to be burned alive as punishment. Dante put himself and his fate in Virgils hands, just as King Lear put himself in the hands of Goneril and Regan. In "King Lear", King Lear kicked out Cordelia, who was truly the good daughter of his three. He then split his authority and kingdom between his other daughters Goneril and Regan, who were sycophantic. King Lear leaves Cordelia dowerless. As luck or providence would have it, through a twist of fate, Cordelia became the queen of France. Goneril, as her fathers guardian, treated him cruelly. Gonerils cruelty eventually drives King Lear to his other daughter, Regan. He hoped to find better treatment there. King Lear ultimately discovered that neither of the two daughters will treat him with kindness as they had promised to do. Upon this revelation, he stormed out and shouted that he will go mad.
