it is useful to remember that the latter state is not literal: in other words, the individual is not genuinely "alone" because they are not in a romantic relationship. There are always family, friends and platonic relationships to be taken into account. However, because our society sets a lot of store by permanent monogamous relationships, it is regarded as preferable to have a boyfriend: this is associated with improved social status, proof of ones attractiveness, and so on. There are, of course, disadvantages to being in a relationship, which we can look at in more detail below. Having a boyfriend, then, is something which is directly related to ones status with ones peers, and to self-esteem. It is quite possible that many girls would be much less concerned about having a boyfriend if they knew their friends would not be aware of the fact: it is a way of "proving" that they are attractive, have sex appeal, and so on. Consequently, the boyfriend himself needs to meet certain standards: there is no point, from the standpoint of social status, in going out with someone who is not regarded as attractive by ones social circle. Even if the boy is acceptable, though, there are still drawbacks: ones self-esteem is constantly defined by the opinions of others, and confined to the very narrow parameters of whether or not one has a boyfriend: this does not help the individual to build genuine self awareness and self esteem, or to function effectively when not "part of a couple". Having a boyfriend does eliminate some difficulties as regards ones "availability", however.
