humanist ideal" (Pioch vinci). In the following paper we compare and contrast two of his paintings, one from his earlier years and one from his later years. The paintings examined
are "The Adoration of the Magi" (1481-82) and "The Virgin of the Rocks" (1503-06). The paintings are analyzed separately and then compared and contrasted. The Adoration of the
Magi "The Adoration of the Magi" (1481-82) is "Yellow ochre and brown ink on panel" and measures 246 x 243 cm (Pioch vinci). "Leonardo was commissioned in 1480 to
paint this work for the main altar of the monastery of San Donato a Scopeto, near Florence. He was to complete it within thirty months, but it remained largely unfinished
and was left behind in Florence when Leonardo set out for Milan the next year" (Anonymous Adoration of the Magi magi.html). In this painting we see "people of
all ages surrounding the Virgin and Child, including some on horseback. Leonardos work was notable for the way he usually attempted to express almost human emotion in his animals" (Anonymous
Adoration of the Magi magi.html). There are stairs in the background upon which there are many people in procession down to the Virgin and Child. "Off to the extreme right
and isolated from the rest of the painting stands a shepherd lone boy. It is thought this may be the only ever self-portrait of a young Leonardo and be
