share similarities as well as possessed differences. They are stories that offer us a look at individuals as they go through a particular period in their lives, a particular event
that perhaps changes them, and they are stories that provide us with completely different types of characters and plots. The following paper first examines two similarities possessed in the stories
and then two differences possessed in the stories. The paper examines the similarities found in setting and the search for identity, and then the differences concerning the theme and the
characters. Similarities In Richard Wrights story the setting is farmland wherein the main character, Dave, lives and works. He lives
with his mother and father and the setting is quite humble and almost timeless in relationship to the simple life on a farm, a simple life that also entails a
lot of work as is evident in Daves reply to his father wherein he states, "Ah plows mo Ian than anybody over there" (Wright, 2005). There are images of "mules
and plows" and fields throughout the story (Wright, 2005). With Mary Hoods short story the time frame is obviously far more modern, but the images of the setting are very
similar as we see the grandmother go about her daily routine that is very reflective of the simple farm type life as well: "The woman...went on unalarmed with her chores,
clearing off after the uneaten meal, bringing in the laundry, scattering corn for the chickens, ladling manure tea onto the porch flowers" (Hood, 1992; 69). In this we see that
although the story tells us there are motorcycles and airplanes, this woman lives very simply in a very humble manner. Another similarity is the search for identity in the two
