at interracial children and interracial relationships. Each story, however, is somewhat different in how it portrays the difficulty of such realities. The following paper examines theme, plot, setting, characters, and imagery as seen in each story. The paper finishes with a comparison and contrast of the two. Desirees Baby The primary theme in this story appears to be how people, perhaps especially men, would rather lie and give up what is precious to them than face truths. The husband in this story dismisses his wife and child, sending them away, because the infant is obviously part African American. He blames her, for her parentage is not known. But, in the end we find that his mother possessed African American blood. The husband is symbolic of those who refuse to accept truth, who refuse to grow, and in the process give up everything that could offer them happiness all because of race. In this we also see the plot, which involves a woman who is happy and content, a woman who makes her husbands life better, and a woman who eventually loses all that she loves and is wrongfully led to believe that she is of African American heritage. The setting is perhaps unknown. We do know that there are at least servants that are black, if not actual slaves. This would indicate, for the most part, that the setting is the South and likely takes place in the early part of the 20th century, bearing in mind that references to driving are made. And, considering that French is spoken one could perhaps assume that the setting is in Louisiana. The characters are the husband, the wife, the infant, and the mother of the wife. There are also servants/slaves, but they only serve to stand as individuals ...
