Comparison and Contrast: A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and Crooklyn Both of these stories are, as mentioned, stories of families that
are living in Brooklyn, New York. They are also both stories that are primarily told through the eyes of a young girl in the family, a young girl who comes
of age in the stories. In addition, the stories are both immersed in a powerful father figure that the girls adore, a man immersed in music and always envisioning that
he will someday make it big for the family and be able to provide for them in a better way. In this both fathers are essentially dreamers, and also perhaps
incapable of really supporting their families. This brings into play the women in the stories for they are the main breadwinners of the families. They are the parental figure who
keeps the families together and who serves as a strong foundation for the families. The girls in the story are Francie (A Tree
Grows in Brooklyn) and Troy (Crooklyn). They are young girls learning about their world. Their world is different, although the world is Brooklyn, for Troy is African American and Francie
is white. Francies story takes place in the beginning of the 20th century while Troys takes place in the 70s. This makes for very different stories in relationship to social
environment and family. There is also the difference in that Troy has many brothers and Francie has only one. Their fathers are also different, although very similar. Francies father is
