of existentialism, inasmuch as his views were wrapped up in the notion that humanity is its own opposing force. To be unique within a world of sameness is a
quest sought by many people; however, it is by way of such an objective that one becomes labeled as selfish and intolerant of commonly accepted methods. This negative connotation
of individualism - which is to maintain an independence from the norm - has cast an even darker meaning upon the essence of faith and how it attempts to control
ones very existence. Believing that man is a selfish being who has limitless desires, and noting that there exists no common denominator between humanity and the rest of nature,
Kierkegaards implication acknowledges that mankind stands alone in his endless quest for more, a concept the philosopher considered to be one of the primary reasons society is its own opposing
force. Kierkegaard was intensely interested in the sanctity of the individual apart from the influence of faith, believing with his heart and soul that each person in society holds
his or her own singular importance. "The ethical is the universal, and as such it is again the divine. One has therefore a right to say that fundamentally every
