as the structure of these narratives. Odysseus story relates the obstacles that Odysseus has to overcome in order to return home after the Trojan War. While Odysseus family waits for
his return, his wife Penelope has to fend off unwanted suitors. The focus is on the heros journey and his triumph over adversity. Jacobs story concerns, first of all, the
rivalry between himself and his brother Esau. There is little travel in Jacobs story. He feels to Laban to escape Esaus anger and find a wife, but other than a
pilgrimage later then life, that is the extent of his travels. Rather then adventurous, Jacobs story concentrates primarily on the conflicts between his two wives, Leah and Rebekah, and the
subsequent birth of his twelve sons, who went on to found the twelve tribes of Israel. However, the two narratives do share one common factor -- the involvement of
divine intervention. From the beginning of the Odyssey, the Greek gods play a profound role in the course of the narrative. In book 1, a council of the gods
is summoned and Zeus decides that Odysseus should be allowed to return home, and Athena proves to be a champion of the Greek hero. The goddess then visits Telemachus, the
son of Odysseus, wearing a disguise and instills in him the courage to challenge the suitors of his mother. Additionally Athena persuade Telemachus to seek out news of his father.
The next divine intervention occurs when Penelopes suitors learn that Telemachus is planning this trip, they plan an ambush at the island of Samos. Penelope finds out about their
plant and is very worried for the safety of her son, but Athena appears to her in a dream and assures her that her son will return safely. Book
