They are stories that make the reader think about many things such as family, love, personal decisions, and deeper conditions such as human value and personal power. The following paper
examines the protagonists in the two stories, comparing and contrasting them. Comparison/Contrast: Hemingway and Walker The protagonists in the stories are "the girl" in Hemingways story and Maggie
in Walkers story, although the mother in Walkers story could also be considered to be the protagonist. In this paper Maggie will be the focus in light of the fact
that the mother is very strong and not altered by the antagonist like Maggie is. The girl and Maggie are similar in some ways because they are both being manipulated
by their antagonist. The girl is being pressured, to a very subtle extent, by her lover into getting an abortion. She admits, "But I dont care about me. And Ill
do it and then everything will be fine" (Hemingway). In the case of Maggie, she tells her mother, in regards to her sisters selfish demand she have quilts promised to
Maggie, "She can have them, Mama, she said, like somebody used to never winning anything, or having anything reserved for her" (Walker). In this both characters are similar because they
are giving in to another, and also demonstrating how they are not necessarily self confident or overly concerned about themselves or their own worth. In relationship to their differences
the girl is lost and seems to be a woman without any positive elements in her life. She seeks answers from the man in relationship to her life and their
relationship: " And you think then well be all right and be happy" (Hemingway). Maggie never questions others in relationship to what she will do or who she will be.
