Rodgers, May 2010 To Use This Paper Properly, Please Introduction Bugiardinis Madonna and Child enthroned with Saints Mary Magdalene and John the Baptist and Caravaggios The Holy Family with the infant St. John the Baptist are both paintings that present the viewer with very similar subject material. They are paintings that offer up the figure of the Virgin Mary, Jesus, and John the Baptist. Each painting then has other figures as well. The following paper examines the two paintings, discussing the various elements through comparison and contrast. Comparison/Contrast: Bugiardini and Caravaggio Composition: In each of these paintings the composition is such that the central figure is Mary and Jesus (assuming the child in Marys lap in Caravaggios painting is Jesus). Mary is seated in both paintings with the naked child standing in her lap. And, in each painting the infant is holding on, or almost holding on, to Marys neck. In Caravaggios the infant has his arms wrapped around Mary while in Bugiardinis the infants arm is aimed towards, and resting upon, her chest. Caravaggios is not nearly as symmetrical as Bugiardinis whose painting offers stairs and an equal number of figures on each side of Mary and the infant. Line: The lines in the paintings are relatively different, although they both possess soft lines reflected in the clothing.
