Hals are all portraits of people and they are all paintings that come from the 17th century. They are powerful, romantic, works to some extent, all utilizing similar elements, despite
the fact that two artists, Harmensz and Hals were Dutch painters and Velazquez was a Spanish painter. The following paper compares and contrasts the three paintings. Comparison/Contrast: Art:
Harmensz, Velazquez, and Hals As mentioned, all three of the paintings are portraits to an extent. It is quite obvious that "Bust of Young Jew" by Rembrandt Harmensz and "Portrait
of Don Pedro de Barberana" by Diego Velazquez are more obviously portraits for they are paintings of only one person and that person is displayed, centered, focused upon, in a
manner that is reflective of the portrait. In Harmensz painting the portrait is of a man whose name is not in the title of the painting, and as such one
could argue it was not a portrait in the true sense. This particular approach is seen in the words of the Kimball Art Museum which states, "Portrait of a Young
Jew is a work that blurs the traditional distinctions between portraiture and historical or biblical subject matter" (Kimball Art Museum [3]). But, because it is a painting of a mans
face and bust, with no other activity taking place, as the background is very dark and inconsequential, it is clearly a portrait. Velazquez portrait is very obviously a portrait
for it is titled the subjects name. It is a full body painting and the background, like that of the background of Harmensz painting, is dark and inconsequential. As such
