higher ideals (International Ergonomics Association, 2002). That is no longer true. In fact, there are many who consider such a concept as outmoded, out of fashion and irrelevant (International Ergonomics
Association, 2002). Such striving has also been accused of being culturally biased and as strange as it may seem, the concept of higher ideals has even been called damaging (International
Ergonomics Association, 2002). True, such a concept does suggest a vertical dimension in ethics and ethical behavior but is this really a concept that should be dismissed so vigorously?
For something so arbitrarily dismissed, the concept of higher ideals, of strong ethical principles certainly does take up an enormous amount of space in the literature and on bookshelves. Professions
wrestle with adopting codes of ethics (International Ergonomics Association, 2002). The American Medical Association is involved in the rephrasing of the Hippocratic Oath. Why? Because, as one article said: "Like
Christianity, the stated ideals are impossible to attain, and only those with an inability to examine themselves would even aspire to them" (International Ergonomics Association, 2002). No, we cannot give
up the quest for higher ideals. Larry Colero, from the Centre for Applied Ethics, said that since 1997, a number of college instructors have offered a framework for a
universal set of ethical principles across numerous countries (Colero, n.d.). And, as many point out, if everyone behaved ethically, there would be no need to have codes of ethics. Most
of the remainder of this essay will discuss and compare two sets of ethics: the American Psychological Association Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct and the values as
published by Saint Leo University with campuses in several states. The revised APA Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct became effective on June 1, 2003 (APA, 2003).
