134.1?, this is the angle that is created by the O, the N and the O in the structure of nitrogen dioxide. this changes when we see NO2 -1 and NO3 -1. In this paper we will look at NO2 first and then at the variation in NO2-1 and NO3-1 to examine how and why these differentes in the bon angle are seen. If we look at NO2 and the bond angles we can remember the VSERP structure rules, where there should be the minimisation of the formal charge. NO2 has a structure that is made up of an outer shell of five electrons. Of these four are required to create the two nitrogen-oxygen double bonds. This leaves a radical; a single electron related to the nitrogen atom. This situation is very unusual as this is a sable molecule that has an unpaired electron. Therefore the electron should be dealt with as if it were a lone pair, however, the level of repulsion will be less than the level of repulsion would be if there were a true lone pair (North, 1998). This makes the electron structure one that is a has a distorted trigonal planar geometry, bending the ONO bond angle to a poison greater than 120? to that of 134.1? 0.25 (North, 1998). The NO bond length is 119.7pm (Anonymous, 2005, Sutton, 1972). This looks like this (North, 1998). If we look at NO2 + 1 there will be a very similar situation to that described above, and looking at this will help to visualise the way in which NO2-1 and NO3-1 are different (North, 1998). The change compared to NO2 is that there is a positive charge which means the nitrogen atom will have one less electron present around it. This means there ...
