what ensues between them is a mixture of violence and misery. It all started when Cathys father brought Heathcliff home from one of his trips when Cathy was just
a child. Heathcliff wrecked havoc on his new family and also on the Linton family, who were close friends. Time passed and Heathcliff went away and Cathy
married. But, all too soon Healthcliff returned wealthy and intent on becoming master of Wuthering Heights. He vows to get Cathy and completely disrupts her life. Cathy
is torn between Heathcliff and her husband. Heathcliff brings passion and excitement into her life, despite the turbulence which also accompanies it. On the other hand, her husbands
love is safe and comforting, albeit rather ordinary and boring. Cathy is enticed by Heathcliff but in the end his love is very destructive. One by one Cathy
and the other children die, leaving only the next generation and Heathcliff, who continues to torment. Eventually though, Heathcliff becomes entirely insane and does indeed die, leaving the next
generation free from the terror and insanity which he inflicted. Clearly, although Heathcliff believed his love for Cathy to be genuine, it was quite obviously infatuation. More
specifically, it was an obsession as opposed to true love. What distinguishes these from each other is the element of personal sacrifice. True love is more concerned with
doing what is best for the other person, instead of what is best for ones self. Heathcliff did not fit this image. Heathcliff was obsessed with Cathy and
often forfeited her happiness and what would ultimately be best for her in order to try and possess her himself. Heathcliff wanted to control Cathy, and in this way
