Whatever one's past might be, American individualism holds that it can either be accepted or rejected by the individual, which overlooks the reality of human development and how behavior, vision, expectations, achievements and dilemmas are connected to one's past. in her short story "Levitation," and Myla Goldberg in her novel Bee Season. The central character in Bee Season is eleven-year-old Eliza Naumann, who has been relegated to the
slow-learner class basically because she was slow learning how to form a cursive "q." Early on in her education, Eliza had been designated as a "student from whom great things
should not be expected" (Goldberg 1). Everything about Elizas combination fourth/fifth grade classroom (Eliza is a fifth grader) communicates to her that she is second class, dysfunction, "slow." Therefore, she
is surprises herself, as well as everyone else, by winning her class spelling bee, then the district spelling bee and getting a chance to participate at the national level.
Throughout Goldbergs narrative, the author creates expository flashbacks that dramatize the forces in Elizas past that play a role in her present. For example, Goldberg describes Ms. Lodowski, who is
in charge of the Talented and Gifted placement program at Elizas elementary school, which is known as TAG. Ms. Lodowski is a woman who "prides herself upon her power of
discernment" (Goldberg 3). In other words, Ms. Lodowski has the utmost faith in her ability to judge children at the age of 7 or 8 on whether they would be
